Are you having trouble determining what you want to do with your life?. When choosing a career or educational path, it may be helpful to see choices that people with similar traits and interests make. The Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory, also known as the Self Directed Search, helps people learn about their own interests and tells them what kind of occupations are filled with people sharing similar interests and quirks.

Note that it doesn't try to tell you what careers a person would be good at. Instead, it tells you what kinds of careers are full of people with similar temperaments. This tends to be a good predictor to whether or not one would enjoy a particular career path.

The basic theme is to ask a person about a bunch of activities, and then ask them whether they 'like', 'dislike', or are 'indifferent' to said activities. Activities might include things like visiting an art museum, playing golf, fixing an auto engine, white water rafting, and collecting stamps.

When processed, the survey shows your chance of liking a large number of individual career choices, as well as showing your tendencies in 6 basic areas: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional.

It also shows you how people how they like basic classes of activities, and as mentioned above, your affinity to career choices. It often helps you focus your interests or bring to light what you suspected about yourself but didn't realize.
