Job Summary
As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner specializing in adolescent mental health, you will work closely with adolescents and their families to provide comprehensive psychiatric care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of mental health conditions. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to promote the overall well-being of adolescent patients.
Responsibilities
Assessment : Conduct thorough psychiatric assessments of adolescents to evaluate their mental health status, including collecting medical histories, performing physical examinations, and assessing psychosocial factors.
Diagnosis : Formulate accurate psychiatric diagnoses based on clinical assessments, patient interviews, and relevant diagnostic criteria (e.g., DSM-5).
Treatment Planning : Develop individualized treatment plans, including medication management and psychotherapy, in consultation with the adolescent and their family.
Medication Management : Prescribe, administer, and monitor psychotropic medications as necessary, ensuring proper dosage, efficacy, and safety.
Psychotherapy : Provide psychotherapeutic interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), or family therapy, tailored to the needs of the adolescent.
Education and Counseling : Offer education and counseling to adolescents and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and coping strategies.
Crisis Intervention : Manage crisis situations and provide immediate support and intervention during psychiatric emergencies.
Collaboration : Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including psychologists, social workers, and primary care physicians, to provide comprehensive care and coordinate treatment plans.
Documentation : Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including progress notes, treatment plans, and medication records, in compliance with legal and ethical standards.
Advocacy : Advocate for the mental health needs of adolescents within the healthcare system, schools, and the community.
Research and Education : Stay current with developments in adolescent psychiatry through continuing education and contribute to research and the advancement of psychiatric care.
Ethical and Legal Compliance : Adhere to ethical and legal standards in the provision of mental health care, including maintaining patient confidentiality and informed consent.
Qualifications
- Master's or Doctoral degree in Psychiatric Nursing.
- State licensure as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in Kentucky
- Certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).
- Specialization or experience in adolescent psychiatry.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-based healthcare environment.
- Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations governing mental health practice.
