Job Summary :
The primary objective of this position is to assure the delivery of comprehensive, safe, effective, cost effective and appropriate nursing care for patients across the age continuum in accordance with established hospital policy, nursing practice standards. Under minimum supervision, directs and / or provides professional nursing care for an assigned group of patients across the age continuum (4 weeks to geriatric). Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation to direct or provide nursing care. Provides supervision and guidance to other members of the team; and may be authorized, in the absence of the manager, to make decisions affecting the OR.
Skills & Abilities :
Provide individualized nursing care to the surgical patient, demonstrating an extensive knowledge base to support a variety of single and multi-system illnesses and or injuries. The RN controls the environment within the surgical suite and accepts responsibility for developing and coordinating a safe plan of care utilizing AORN standards of practice and within the framework of set forth by the policies and procedures for SPSC.Provide supervision of the daily operations of the OR. Coordinates the daily schedule and makes adjustments to schedule as needed to ensure appropriate staffing, equipment availability, and surgeon needs in order to provide optimal patient outcomes. Communicates adjustments and vital information to members of the surgical team and other departments involved.Serves as a resource person for staff. Coordinates with vendors for necessary equipment and works in collaboration with the SPD department to negate need for immediate use sterilization. Responds to emergency situations in the department.Demonstrates critical thinking skills, ability to provide and delegate activities to staff based on patient assessment and the requirements to deliver care in a safe efficient manner maximizing positive outcomes for the patient.Provides documentation of patient care in the patient record according to established standards of nursing care.Collaborates with surgeons and their office staff to facilitate utilization of OR time, uses critical thinking and judgement to facilitate efficiency in daily schedule and room turn over time. Uses proactive problem-solving skills to reduce delays in surgical cases to maximize patient, physician and employee satisfaction.Makes daily staff assignments and monthly staffing schedules. Monthly schedule should be published for staff 6 weeks prior to first date on schedule.Participates in performance improvement activities which include collecting, analyzing data to identify quantifiable measures to maintain quality and the promotion of desired outcomes. Also includes participation in development of patient care delivery systems, standards, policy and procedures, and problem-solving teams.Demonstrates an awareness and relevance of research in nursing. Evaluates practices to identify areas for improvement or opportunities for research.Adheres to all Hospital Policies and Procedures, specifically Guidelines for Appropriate Conduct, Corporate Compliance, Diversity, and Confidentiality.Identifies potential risks to patients identifies risks to patients in order to reduce incidence of injury; identifies actions to eliminate, minimize or report risks; identifies procedures to follow in the event of an incident; reports processes for common problems, failures and user errors.Demonstrates the spirit of the philosophy, mission, and values of the hospital through words and actions and implements them into departmental processes, programs, and the working environment.Applies the principles and values of customer service and continuous quality improvement while performing day-to-day activities of the position.Maintains and protects confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care, personnel and strategic issues.Adheres to Confidentiality Policy.Maintains positive working relationships and fosters cooperative work environment.
Adheres to the hospital's Guidelines for Appropriate Conduct in the HR Manual.Displays honesty and mutual respect when communicating with peers and other departments.Follows through on problems that may compromise effective job performance by using appropriate chain of command.Review surgery schedule and facilitate running of surgery schedule.Ensures all daily monitoring is performed and documented. Notifies Facilities Staff when there are values beyond normal ranges. Follows up until issue is resolved and documents corrective actionAssists director in the utilization review / performance improvement and infection control efforts.Assist the staff in anticipating case needs for the following day and in procuring necessary equipment for surgical procedures.Functions as a patient advocate and liaison between patients, families, physicians, etc. In the event of any issues between medical team members, families, etc. the Charge Nurse will intervene and resolve the issue. If he / she is unable to resolve the issue the issue will be brought to the attention of the Clinical Manager so the issue can be addressed.Oversee the care of patients and serve as a resource person for all staff. Responsible to notify they Physician or Physicians designee of any change in the surgery schedule in collaboration with Pre-op staff and scheduling staffMake daily assignments based on staff competency, skill, and procedures performed. Monitor staffing and take appropriate action. Oversee the assignment of lunch and break times. Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing required, Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.Current and active RN license in the State of North Carolina requiredMust be able to communicate and understand the English language both verbal and writtenBLS certification required at hire; ACLS, and PALS within 6 months of employmentMinimum three (3) years OR experience as a Registered Nurse.General and Unit specific competencies up to date.Charge Nurse experience requiredOur employees are critical to our success, and we value their contributions.
