Assessment Skills :

The Discovery classroom teacher takes a lead in coordinating and conducting high quality team evaluations for referred children in order to determine eligibility for special education and, if eligible, inform the IEP process.

  • Proficiency in administering and interpreting formal and informal assessments for the purpose of determining eligibility for special education and identifying potential areas of need expertise in the use of AEPS3i specifically
  • Ability to plan activities that allow for observed ratings vs. direct test of items to the maximum extent appropriate
  • Deep knowledge of typical child development and expected milestones
  • Experience with and knowledge of disabilities and their impact on development
  • Understanding of individual differences within an age-expected range
  • Ability to synthesize assessment data from a variety of sources (i.e. parent report,outside providers, medical information, etc.)
  • Ability to clearly interpret and communicate assessment results, particularly AEPS3
  • Creativity related to service and placement proposals that meet individual student and family needs in the least restrictive environment

The Discovery classroom teacher is one of the first contacts many families have with the Blue Valley school district. Families need a clear understanding of the evaluation process, confidence in the evaluators and experience, and to be well prepared for potential outcomes.

  • Collaboration and Communication with Colleagues :

    The Discovery classroom teacher leads the evaluation process with a team that includes a school psychologist, school social worker (C to B transition facilitator), SLP, OT, and low- incidence related service providers (PT, DHH, Vision, etc.). He or she is responsible to coordinate evaluation activities across potential receiving teams, including any service provider in the program.

    The Discovery classroom teacher coordinates evaluation activities involving specific timelines and processes which involving multiple stakeholders.

  • Knowledge of and compliance with special education process
  • Ability to manage workflows in order to ensure timely and accurate information is available to families and team members to allow ample time for their participation
  • Effective, efficient, and transparent organizational practices to facilitate others' ability to participate in the evaluation and intervention planning process
  • Effective use of technology to support coordination / collaboration
  • Cultural Competency :

    The Discovery classroom teacher is responsible to ensure that evaluation practices and communication are culturally and linguistically sensitive and demonstrate respect for the wide range of families served

  • Awareness of how culture and language can influence a child's development and behavior

  • Ability to effectively use tools to communicate with individuals who are not proficient in English
