Project Summary :
The New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) is responsible for ensuring that New York City Department of Education (DoE) facilities provide a safe and functional educational environment for the city’s public school students. The SCA requires a comprehensive Building Condition Assessment Survey (BCAS) of DoE assets (approximately 130 million square feet of space housed in over 1,500 facilities) to meet state-mandated reporting requirements and to support the DoE’s capital planning efforts. Since 1997, WSP (then PB / A&W joint venture), has been providing inspection services and related support for the BCAS project.
This six-time awarded follow-on project involves the performance of detailed visual inspections of each facility, identification of deficiencies, estimation of costs and assessment of infrastructure issues. The current BCAS task is an annual survey and contributes over $11 billion in deficiencies to the SCA’s Capital Program. A key to the past success of this project has been the WSP joint venture’s methodology and software systems and the continuous upgrading of those systems. The WSP team, in collaboration with the SCA, has developed unique systems to meet specific project needs for every type of asset.
Job Description :
Looking for electrical engineers who are interested in spending the majority of their work-days outdoors—specifically, at New York City public schools. The Electrical Engineer will be joining our team to work on the annual Building Conditions Assessment Survey (BCAS) project, on behalf of the New York City School Construction Authority. The ideal candidate will be working in a team of four, comprising two Architects (licensed and in-training), one Electrical Engineer, and one Mechanical Engineer, conducting visual inspections of New York City public schools in both Brooklyn and Queens. There will be a 3-week training course to catch the architect-in-training up to speed with the project’s specific methodology and processes; after the first three weeks, the engineer (inspector) will then be scheduled to inspect school buildings with his / her team. The team will be using in-house-developed software on iPads to generate inspection reports. Because the team is scheduled for individual school buildings each day, the team is required to complete and submit the inspection data / report by the end of the work day.
