Job description

About the job Department Manager - Transmission

The Chicago T&D Transmission Department Manager will report to the T&D Operations Director and be responsible for overall internal development and management of the Chicago Transmission Department. Duties will include personnel management, recruiting, business planning, training, mentoring, quality, and safety. This position will work closely with the Transmission Business Line Manager, Transmission Technical Manager, and Transmission Assistant Department Manager to lead and develop the Transmission Department in Chicago.

Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties assigned by GP management :

Organizational

  • Advocating for safety within the department.
  • Coordinating workload for the transmission department including making assignments and reviewing performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.
  • Supporting overall regional office development and resource coordination between GPs.
  • Interpreting policies, procedures, and goals of the organization to staff.
  • Assisting in the development and execution of the Chicago T&D Business Plan.
  • Preparing and monitoring the department budget and expenditure of funds for staffing hours, supplies, training, and equipment.
  • Supporting diversity initiatives.
  • Facilitating profitable and sound growth of the Department by coordinating with the Transmission Business Line Manager to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.
  • Supporting Human Resources on educational partnerships and internship programs.
  • Recommending changes in basic structure and organization of the department to ensure the effective fulfillment of objectives assigned to it.
  • Regularly meet with Technical Department Managers, Project Directors, and Project Managers to coordinate staffing needs, performance, and proper utilization of staff.
  • Coordinate with other department managers in Kansas City and other regional offices.

Business Development

  • Assist the Transmission Business Line Manager and Transmission Technical Manager in providing overall oversight and direction for the business development of the Chicago Transmission Market. Work with the appropriate personnel on the development and administration of the Transmission Business Plan.
  • Work closely with the Transmission Business Line Manager to oversee the development of transmission work with new clients as well as the expansion of transmission work with existing clients.
  • Identify transmission opportunities, provide oversight and enthusiasm for a coordinated and disciplined pursuit process including thoughtful go / no-go decisions, win strategies, proposal staffing, development of pricing, contract terms and conditions, and risk-reviews.
  • Personnel

  • Training, developing, mentoring, and career-development of the staff.
  • Recruiting top-talent as well as the engagement and retainage of staff.
  • Organizing, leading, and coordinating recruiting activities for the department.
  • Where needed, serve as project manager for key clients, new clients, or where new lines of business are being developed.
  • Management and career development of department personnel. Responsible for the development of leadership within the transmission department and for assisting with the overall leadership development within the office.
  • Organizing, leading, and conducting the annual performance appraisal process for department staff.
  • Facilitate a thriving work environment that facilitates the recruitment, development, and retainment of the markets top-talent.
  • Technical / Execution / Production

  • Serve as the technical advisor, providing senior-level input and evaluation on Transmission Engineering projects.
  • Advocate for quality and ensure that the corporate and T&D quality initiatives are implemented, including coordinating with the appropriate teams to assign quality control reviewers in coordination with the Transmission Technical Manager.
  • Advancing and developing department tools and workflows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.
  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
  • Proactively work through corrective actions where deficiencies are identified.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, construction or related degree from accredited program.
  • Minimum 7 years related professional experience in design and / or project management.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer is preferred.
  • Technical ability in Transmission Engineering Design is strongly preferred.
  • Proven leadership in developing and implementing vision that has brought positive impact.
  • Demonstrated excellent written & verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
  • Ability to handle difficult situations with tact, poise, and discernment.
  • Proven collaboration, facilitation, and organization problem solving skills in previous role
