Tonal is looking for a Staff Electrical Engineer in the Power Electronics domain to develop new and innovative fitness products. Our team offers a unique opportunity to define a new category and build experiences with a variety of advanced technologies.

The Tonal hardware team is developing complex electrical and mechanical systems containing everything from high-speed digital processors to low-power microcontrollers, power electronics and motor control to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and from analog sensors to audio and camera systems.

We are looking for design experience in 3-phase inverter design for motor control with an excellent understanding of switched mode power conversion. We design the motor control hardware in-house, and the AC / DC designs will mainly be specification and vendor management. The ideal candidate will have experience with system integration which is critical for passing EMC.

What you will do :

  • Lead the execution of major EE programs and systems.
  • Lead the development efforts of our powertrain including BLDC motor control, inverters, AC / DC power conversion, regeneration, and power distribution.
  • Take products from concept to production.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Mechanical, ID, and Firmware) to ensure proper system integration.
  • Work across departments with Program Management, Product Management, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Customer Care to bring it all together and ensure a great product.
  • Ensure FCC / EMC requirements are met.

Who you are :

  • Proven technical leadership and experience in taking full products to mass production.
  • 10+ years of experience developing electronics systems.
  • DCDC and AC / DC power conversion design and integration :
  • Experience with Power Electronics in the 3kW range with EMC, thermal, and MTBF considerations.
  • Experience with BLDC motor control and inverter design.
  • Experience with AC / DC power conversion and multi-quadrant designs.
  • Experience specifying motor designs.
  • Strong background in EE best practices, fundamentals, and system-level design and validation.
  • At Tonal, we believe that the unique and varied lived experiences of our teammates contribute to our overall strength. We don’t just appreciate differences; we celebrate them, and we always seek people that represent a wide variety of backgrounds. We’re dedicated to adding new perspectives to the team and designing employee experiences that contribute to your growth as much as you do to ours. If your experience aligns with what we’re looking for (even if you don’t check every single box), send us your application. We would love to hear from you!
