Responsibilities

Florida State University invites applications for the position of Chair of the School of Dance. The Chair will provide innovative and inspiring leadership, working with faculty to develop and advance a strategic vision for the school. The Chair will embody, support, and convey the mission of teaching, research, and service to varying audiences.

  • Serve as the principal administrative and financial officer, working with the professional business staff to develop and maintain annual budgets and authorize expenditures while adhering to best fiscal practices and College and School bylaws.
  • Collaborate effectively with stakeholders, including the volunteer patron organization, serving as the primary representative of the School of Dance within and outside of the College of Fine Arts and Florida State University community.
  • Collaborate with the School of Dance and College of Fine Arts to uphold and promote the mission, vision, strategic plan, and bylaws.
  • Work with College and University leadership along with communications and advancement experts to enhance the visibility and national / international preeminence of the school and the activities of faculty, students, and alumni.
  • Serve as a member of the College’s Leadership Team and the liaison between the school and College, in support of and alignment with institutional mission, goals, and strategies.
  • Facilitate the recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students, and cultivate a departmental culture that promotes respect, responsibility, and trust.
  • Supervise and evaluate faculty and staff, adhering to FSU policies for promotion and / or tenure, while providing ongoing mentorship and supporting and / or facilitating professional development opportunities for faculty, staff, and students, ensuring their growth and advancement in teaching, research, and service.
  • Collaborate with the leadership of the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC) to create and support opportunities for student engagement with artists-in-residence.
  • Oversee program reviews and collaborate with faculty to develop, implement, and annually review the school's strategic plan, ensuring reports and outcomes are shared with relevant stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in Dance and / or a related discipline, or commensurate experience, with a strong record of promoting high-quality teaching, research, and service in higher education or engagement in the profession.
  • Strong record of effective leadership and management of programs and people utilizing clear communication, appropriate delegation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in higher education administration and fundraising.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific accreditation standards and processes.
  • Distinguished record of professional accomplishment that merits an appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure.
  • Demonstrated commitment to strengthening existing collaborations and establishing new partnerships with professional, industry, and arts organizations regionally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Familiarity with a variety of specializations and career paths within the dance field, along with strong organizational skills and proficiency in communication technologies that enhance efficiency and professionalism.
  • Credentials or professional experience appropriate for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching in the discipline.
