Job description

2-3 sentences describing job purpose) : This position is responsible for assisting in a safe and efficient operation of the dispatch office. Under general supervision, this position is responsible for providing general direction to school bus drivers and monitors related to their assigned routes. These directions may include providing student information and contacting first responders in cases of emergencies. The dispatcher works with the Transportation Supervisor to ensure routes in their assigned area of responsibility are run efficiently and on time; responsible for maintaining phone as well as two-way radio logs and other records; performs a wide variety of specialized and analytical duties. Provide customer service support to drivers, monitors, supervisors and others. The successful candidate must be willing to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and split shifts. An individual in this position is expected to perform additional job-related responsibilities and duties throughout the facility as assigned and / or as needed.

Job Duty / Resp. 1 :

Works with Transportation staff to orchestrate daily logistics and information flow for school bus transportation’s operational needs. Prioritizes tasks to ensure seamless transportation services to students.

Job Duty / Resp. 2 :

Relays messages via two-way radio communications between transportation leadership and bus drivers regarding assignments, weather, traffic flow, etc.

Job Duty / Resp. 3 :

Provides bus drivers with detailed routing directions and stops locations to ensure all stops are covered.

Job Duty / Resp. 4 :

Masters an understanding of District’s street networks and roadway construction zones to enable optimal bus transportation services.

Job Duty / Resp. 5 :

Inputs daily information into computer software database for driver’s attendance records; route coverage recap reports for reporting to leadership; and to record any mechanical malfunction of the fleet.

Job Duty / Resp. 6 :

Clearly and professionally communicates with co-workers; school officials; emergency agencies; and the community about transportation-related items and situations.

Job Duty / Resp. 7 :

Compiles and analyzes daily reports for trending process improvement purposes. Reports deviations from predetermined standards to appropriate leadership.

Job Duty / Resp. 8 :

Provides input to supervisor regarding proposed changes and improvements.

Education and Experience Requirements

Education (training / degree) : Required minimum : High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Experience : Previous Dispatch or Customer Service experience preferred

Skills Required : Basic routing skills and computer skills required.

Level 1 : Handles machines, tools, equipment, or work aids involving little or no latitude for judgment regarding attainment of standard or in selecting appropriate items.

Safety of Others : Level 3 : Requires responsibility for the safety and health of others and for occasional enforcement of the laws and standards of public health and safety.

Physical Demands :

Level 6 : Requires medium work involving standing or walking all of the time, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular basis, and considerable dexterity and skill in operating machinery and tools.

Level 3 : The position is exposed to extreme heat / cold, wet or humid conditions, bright / dim lights, intense noise levels, and traffic.
