Our Client, a Business Manufacturing And Supply company, is looking for a Opto-Mechanical Process Development Engineer for their Fairport, NY location.
Responsibilities :
- Concurrently with the product development team, work to define, develop, and deliver new optical products and manufacturing processes for precision optics which meet all technical requirements.
- This position supports the Precision Optics (PO) and Laser Optics (LO) component and assembly manufacturing groups with product and process development responsibilities.
- This position interfaces with both the development group and the plant operations group.
- The focus of this role is developing new opto-mechanical production capabilities that do not currently exist in the manufacturing plant but are needed to meet new product design requirements.
- Perform as key member of the product development team starting with program launch to enable early involvement and concurrent engineering of manufacturing processes.
- Process development is accomplished in a consistent, standardized manner utilizing a knowledge center of best practices and DF / X methodologies.
- Engage the plant receivers (process engineering, operations associates, quality, supply chain, etc.) during the development phase through informal and formal design reviews.
- Individuals applying for this position must be team oriented and able to work collaboratively with others.
- To champion the use of DF / X tools on product development teams
- Consider lowest production costs with design alternatives
- Attempt to eliminate manufacturing / assembly waste with product design
- Ensure products are designed for stable processes that are already in use; if current processes do not meet new requirements, develop new processes concurrently during product development.
- Participate in the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and Critical Design Review (CDR) of all new product development.
- Participate in Manufacturing Risk Assessments and manage Risk Reduction activities.
- Specify new manufacturing capabilities via development of new techniques, or specifying new equipment, tools, fixtures, test equipment.
- Develop process flow charts, work instructions, process sheets, checklists, forms, and other required documentation for detailed product build strategy.
- Responsible for pre-transfer (prototypes & pilots) build quality and delivery commitments.
- Train first round of manufacturing personnel on new capabilities and processes.
- Stay current with the latest manufacturing trends and seek out the appropriate experts when needed.
- Assess existing manufacturing capability gaps and recommend development activities.
- Solid modeling of fixtures & tools using Creo CAD software
- Set-up, develop processes for, and operate new production equipment
Requirements :
BS in Optical, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering, or AAS degree with 10+ years' experience in the field of Optics3+ years' experience, preferably in the field of opticsKnowledge of the manufacture of optical materials, components, and assembliesKnowledge of optical metrology equipment including interferometers, profilometers, & autocollimatorsAptitude for precision hands-on optical and mechanical skills; experience with assembling close tolerance parts that may have unusual shapes or parametersHave a drive for continuous improvement and be flexible and willing to learn new thingsOptics and optical materialsPrecision machining and measurementPrecision alignment, positioning, and assemblyInterferometric testingManufacturing processingExperience in precision machining and measurement including CNC equipment and programming; use of G-codeExperience using 3D solid modeling software; Solid modeling of fixtures & tools using Creo CAD softwareFamiliarity with Master CamExperience with process development in an optics shop environmentKnowledge of plano polishing on pitch lapping equipmentKnowledge of optical material and coating interaction with high power lasers at UV wavelengthsStrong communication skills including written, verbal, and formal presentationsProficiency in Excel is required.
