Position Summary
The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Stevenson University is a 16 hours / week (9 months / year) position. This person serves as a consultant and provides professional psychiatric expertise, conducts professional psychiatric examinations, and treatment for students. Education / Experience Current nurse practitioner license in Maryland is required with Post Master’s Certificate as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with 3-5 years of outpatient psychiatric care, preferably in a university counseling center setting with telemedicine experience. Experience in both medication management as well as therapy. Knowledge / Skills / Ability
- Ability to conduct psychiatric assessments, diagnostic evaluations, prescribes medications, and psychiatric treatment
- Ability to provide individual and / or group therapy
- Ability to assist in emergency management and crisis intervention in collaboration with Wellness staff.
- Consultation and collaboration with Wellness Center staff.
- Current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques, methods, issues, and approaches in psychiatry.
- Excellent understanding of the full range of developmental and mental health challenges affecting emerging adults
- Differentiate psychiatric presentations of medical conditions from psychiatric disorders
- Drug regimens and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration
- Legal and ethical standards for the delivery of psychiatric care.
Physical Requirements Light work : exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and / or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Sedentary work. Typing, talking, hearing, repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Requires physical abilities consistent with a busy office environment on a university campus. Daily work with computers, monitors, copy machines and other office equipment. Should be able to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends. Essential Functions
Conduct psychiatric examinationsProvide assessments and diagnostic evaluationsPerforms psychopharmacological evaluations, prescribe psychotropic drugs and related medications based on clinical indications of a patient’s status to treat symptoms of psychiatric disorders and improve functional health status. Participate in staff meetings or group supervision with recommendations of appropriate treatment approachesOrder and interpret findings of relevant diagnostic and laboratory tests.Update and maintain patient’s medical recordsProvide individual and / or group therapyMaintain current, accurate, and timely clinical documentation in accordance with state and federal law, medical ethics, and Wellness policies.Review patients’ records to determine the progress, effectiveness, and appropriateness of treatment services offeredCommunicate with health providers, hospitals, and appropriate family members, as related to the psychiatric care of patientsCoordinate referrals and ongoing access to primary and other health care services for patientsProvide consultation to and seek consultation from other health related care clinicians to enhance quality and cost-effective services for patients.Provide consultation to the Cares team when deemed appropriateEducate patients as to the nature of the psychiatric condition and provide appropriate instructions on the proper intervention and treatments.Counsel patients regarding health promotion and preventative measuresSupport implementation of outreach to the university on topics of mental healthParticipate in committee / meetings, such as Student Affairs when appropriateDemonstrate a positive attitude as a representative of the Wellness Center, on campus and in the larger community
