Job description

The nutritionist will be responsible for the execution of the nutrition program carefully designed for each phase of production (replacement gilts, sows, boars, and WTF pigs). Establishing feeding programs, monitoring ingredient cost, formulating diets that optimize feed cost, and providing nutritional support. Responsible for working with and advising internal and external stakeholders to define and deliver production goals.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Establishes feeding programs for all phases of production
  • Monitors diet formulations according to ingredient prices and projected animal performance / efficiency
  • Least cost formulation, using software and developing practical diets to optimize feed cost
  • Analyzes and interprets production data
  • Monitors feed costs and usages
  • Creates and manages reports related to ingredients, complete feed, and financial analysis associated with feed metrics and financial goals
  • Monitors sow farm feed ordering to ensure efficiency
  • Provides technical support to veterinarians, production team, and contract growers
  • Visits feed mills, sow farms and finishing barns to ensure execution of feeding program
  • Communicates feed changes with feed mills, production managers, feed desk and farms to ensure correct implementation
  • Researches industry trends and attends to key industry conferences designated by the company
  • Keeps up to date with regulatory changes
  • Complies with the practices and principals of biosecurity to safeguard the life and health of the swine herd
  • Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE :

  • A Masters or PhD degree in animal sciences AND
  • Two years of experience (preferred) in feed operations, research, quality assurance or nutrition related areas.
  • Any similar combination of education and experience
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

  • Ability to formulate swine diets (preferred)
  • Familiarity with contemporary record keeping systems
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to interact with team members, producers and industry allies in a professional manner
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills to creatively solve problems and build consensus with others for recommendations
  • Ability to adapt easily to change
  • Identify necessary actions to achieve task completion and to obtain results with a sense of urgency
  • Demonstrates knowledge of overall business strategy and feed operations
  • Demonstrates knowledge Microsoft Office with emphasis in Excel
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, kneel, walk for extended periods of time
  • The ability to occasionally lift 50 lbs
  • Position Location & Travel

  • 30% regional travel (US Midwest)
