Position Description

The Elementary Afterschool Program at GCC is a place for children from all backgrounds to recreate, socialize, learn and grow. As a 21st Century Community Learning Center, we provide academic and enrichment opportunities intentionally designed to be hands-on and connected to school day goals while helping children develop social-emotional and problem-solving skills. This program serves Kindergarten – 5th grade students.

Essential Functions

  • Execute lesson plans and ensure all materials needed are accounted for.
  • Respect confidentiality of GCC families and staff.
  • Respond timely to requests from teachers needing substitute coverage. Communicate any changes to availability to Childcare Coordinator.
  • Assist with schedule implementation, supervision, and classroom management while supporting developmentally appropriate practices as well as program goals.
  • Provide a supportive environment in which children are encouraged to participate both as individuals as well as members of a classroom community.
  • Ensure all children in program are tracked according to GCC expectations.
  • Participate in activities that allow children to learn through play encouraging curiosity, exploration, and problem solving in a mixed aged classroom setting.
  • Assist with clean up after projects or meals (wiping down tables, sweeping, mopping).
  • Help with classroom organization and prepping activities for the following day.
  • Support children in their social-emotional development using multiple approaches including Conscious Discipline and positive guidance techniques.
  • Assist with classroom transitions, while being flexible to unexpected changes in program.
  • Float to rooms, as needed, to ensure teacher to child ratios are maintained.
  • Communicate child concerns and family needs to the preschool team.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties of this position.

Requirements : Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • High School Degree or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Experience working in an after school setting.
  • Completion of one non-credit approved course in early childhood education or completion of one course for credit in early childhood education or its equivalent at an institution of higher education.
  • Commitment to GCC’s mission to strengthening lives and securing futures; and values to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of resources in and around the Madison area including City of Madison Accreditation Guidelines.
  • Familiar with Conscious Discipline and Creative Curriculum.
  • Experience working with staff and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Job requires frequent verbal and written communication. Willingness to work during peak periods as required and available. Computer, telephone, copier, and fax use are required.
