Job description

Job Overview

The Senior, Customs Department supports all import requirements for Macy’s private brand merchandise in compliance with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) rules and regulations, as well as those of other government agencies. They work closely with sourcing and product development teams within the organization, as well as with service providers, to ensure goods are imported into the US timely and accurately. They also perform other duties as assigned. This position reports to the Director, Customs Compliance.

What You Will Do

  • Ensure compliance with Customs and other government agencies such as Fish & Wildlife, Food & Drug Administration, Lacey Act, and Consumer Product Safety Commission.
  • Resolve all customs and government issues related to the clearance of merchandise.
  • Assign Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) numbers for wearing apparel, accessories, home textiles, home décor, cookware, and houseware.
  • Maintain annual Trade Compliance requirements for Macy’s Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) program.
  • Approve, audit, and maintain Free Trade Preference Programs for import items.
  • Monitor customs broker processes to ensure timely and accurate clearance of merchandise.
  • Work closely with product teams and provide customs-related training to Product Managers and Assistants.
  • Communicate frequently with customs brokers, freight forwarders, government agencies, product teams in New York, and overseas offices.
  • Monitor import requirements into the United States.
  • Research and provide guidance on global imports and exports as necessary.
  • Handle ad hoc projects related to the customs department.

Skills You Will Need

Regulatory Compliance : Knowledge of customs regulations and other government agency requirements, including Fish & Wildlife, Food & Drug Administration, Lacey Act, and Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Issue Resolution : Ability to resolve customs and government issues related to the clearance of merchandise.

HTS Classification : Expertise in assigning Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) numbers for wearing apparel, accessories, home textiles, home décor, cookware, and houseware.

Trade Compliance : Experience in maintaining annual Trade Compliance requirements for programs like Macy’s Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT).

Process Monitoring : Ability to monitor customs broker processes to ensure timely and accurate clearance of merchandise.

Communication : Strong written and verbal communication skills for frequent interaction with customs brokers, freight forwarders, government agencies, and product teams.

Project Management : Skills to handle ad hoc projects related to the customs department.

Technical Proficiency : Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Attention to Detail : Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills.

Managerial Skills : Strong managerial skills to oversee customs operations and ensure compliance.

Team Collaboration : Works well with others and is a team player.

Specialized Knowledge : Familiarity with Free Trade Preference Programs, first sale, duty drawback, and foreign trade zone requirements.

Customs Broker License : A Customs Broker license is a plus.
