  • Internship Snapshot :

    The Planning Department is seeking a proactive Intern II with a strong interest in urban planning, aviation, and land use compatibility. The ideal candidate will leverage their analytical and research skills to contribute to real-world airport planning projects and gain hands-on experience in infrastructure development. They should be adaptable, detail-oriented, and innovative, bringing fresh perspectives and problem-solving abilities to the team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to learn and develop technical expertise while working on impactful projects in a forward-thinking setting.

    What You’ll Do :

  • Program Administration : Support document development initiatives. Prepare reports, graphics, and presentations to communicate planning studies and recommendations effectively. Update and assist in maintaining planning data and updating records for special projects related to airport land use and development.
  • Project Coordination : Assist with project planning. Review and analyze proposed airfield, terminal, and ground transportation capital improvement projects, as well as tenant improvements. Conduct research, participate in site visits, attend project meetings, and collaborate with stakeholders. Assist in special projects coordinated with the Planning and Airport Land Use Commission. Review, analyze, and organize data to support proposed project evaluations and decision-making.
  • Program Communication : Develop and refine technical presentations to effectively convey complex planning data and project findings to stakeholders. Analyze and interpret data to ensure accuracy, relevance, and clarity in all communications. Assist in crafting clear, concise messaging for reports and presentations, ensuring alignment with project goals. Support the preparation of meeting materials, including visual aids, charts, and briefing documents, to facilitate productive stakeholder discussions and decision-making processes. Collaborate with team members to enhance communication strategies and improve engagement with key stakeholders.

  • Requirements

    Ready to Fly? Educational Qualifications for Airport Interns

    1. Undergradute students currently enrolled

  • in at least twelve (12) units at an accredited college may qualify.
  • 2. Students in their final semester or quarter who need less than full-time enrollment to graduate with four (4) year degree need only be enrolled part-time in courses required for undergraduate degree completion.

    3. Educational major must be related to area of interest.

  • Pre-Flight Checklist : SAN Internship Onboarding :

    Joining our Summer Internship program at the Airport Authority is an exciting opportunity, and we want to ensure a smooth onboarding process for the selected interns. Before the selected interns receive their boarding passes this summer, please take note of the following pre-conditions that must be fulfilled and approved prior to taking flight in our Summer Internship program :

  • Post-Offer Pre-Employment Medical Examination and Substance Test :
  • Successful completion of a post-offer pre-employment medical examination and an alcohol / chemical substance test is mandatory.

  • FBI Background Investigation :
  • A thorough background investigation, including an FBI fingerprint based criminal history records check, of your references and employment / education history from the last 10 years will be conducted. This includes a visit to our Access Control Office inside Terminal 2 in the San Diego International Airport, be camera ready!

  • Proof of Citizenship or Legal Authorization :
  • Submission of documentation proving citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States is essential, complying with the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.

  • Completion of Onboarding Forms :
  • Timely completion of all required onboarding forms .
