Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Division of Craniofacial and Surgical Care provides a diverse approach to treatment for patients with craniofacial or oral and maxillofacial conditions, including those with multiple or complex oral health problems. The Orthodontics discipline focuses on the treatment of irregularities of the teeth, jaws, and bite relationship in children and adults.

Position Summary

The Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) provides service to patients who are referred to the Orthodontic Clinics at UNC Adams School of Dentistry for evaluation and treatment. This position is directly responsible for onboarding new patients by responding to prospective new-patient referrals or inquiries. The PCC establishes patient contact, orients prospective new patients to the clinic, and schedules new-patient appointments. The PCC also creates charts for new patients and collects initial information for the patient's database (radiographs, dental clearance, referral letters, etc) from referring dentists. The PCC manages patient assignments to Orthodontic residents to ensure equal distribution and serves as back-up to the Financial Care Coordinator and front desk staff, performing financial contracts, collecting payments, answering phones, and scheduling patient appointments as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

The selected candidate should be outgoing, have a strong work ethic, be open to learning new skills, and function well both independently and in a team-oriented environment. The selected candidate must have the ability to interface and take direction from a wide range of faculty members. The selected candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to convey information across a variety of cultural, societal, and ethnic backgrounds. The selected candidate should be proficient in basic computer skills such as word processing, spreadsheet creation and management, and learning electronic patient-management software. The selected candidate must also be comfortable with the use of new and emerging technology in their work environment. This position uses numerous University and commercial software in daily tasks.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Bilingual abilities, specifically in Spanish, are highly desirable. Experience, in a comparable role, in a dental or medical setting.

Special Physical / Mental Requirements

Must be able to work on the telephone and at a computer, using a keyboard and monitor(s), for prolonged periods. Must be able to tolerate office lighting sufficient to allow customers (patients / parents / residents) to comfortably read documents and interact in a meeting setting.
