Job description

Responsible for leading, managing, and designing automated equipment. Defines plans and monitors technical performance and expenditures; coordinates the technical effort and establishes operational plans to accomplish project objectives.In addition to designing custom equipment, the position will manage and mentor other engineers.

Requirements

Responsibilities :

  • Mechanical Design

Perform mechanical engineering for custom automation projects, including detailed designs and component drawings.

  • Provide mechanical engineering support on projects being executed on the manufacturing floor (support includes : design, build guidance, materials, and quality issue resolution).
  • Write technical documents.
  • Perform advanced technical calculations.
  • Project Management
  • Complete project management tasks such as billings, hours reports, forecasts, and budget management on time.

  • Lead project meetings on a weekly or as-needed basis with customers and internal teams.
  • Issue and maintain project schedules, advising management and customers when there are schedule issues.
  • Encourage dormant or unresponsive customers with follow-up communications.
  • Ensure that projects are completed within scope, timeline, and budget, while maintaining high quality standards and high customer satisfaction.
  • Technical Leadership
  • Provide overall design direction on a project basis.

  • Check drawings for drawing quality and design quality.
  • Provide technical guidance to other engineers through reviews, technical discussions, and design feedback.
  • Lead design reviews, internally and with customer.
  • Provide mentoring to other mechanical engineers.
  • Develop and enforce standards for the group.
  • Implement training and skills development programs.
  • Maintain the tools required by the group to do their job.
  • Project Management Oversight
  • Oversee progress of projects managed by others

  • Review project schedules and project financials with PMs each month (at minimum) and produce overall financial summary reports.
  • Drive PM's to resolve project issues that arise.
  • With other Managers, keep PM procedures and tools up to date. This includes holding meetings with Project Managers to keep them synchronized on current procedures, solicit feedback, and develop improvements.
  • Team Management
  • Be the direct supervisor for members of the group.

  • Approve overtime, timesheets, expense reports, and leave requests.
  • Manage engineering resources and priorities, including maintaining the schedule for the group.
  • Leadership and Performance
  • Check in on, and encourage, the engineers. Hold 1-1 meetings on a certain frequency.

  • Drive billable hours within the group, which means checking people's hours every week and inquiring about low hours or praising for high hours
  • Hold career / performance reviews with engineers every 6-12 months
  • Hold team building activities : lunches, small group activities, etc
  • Hiring
  • Review resumes and attend interviews

  • Sales
  • Attend sales calls and sales meetings

  • Develop project scope definitions
  • Attend meetings with distributors, vendors, and partners
  • Provide project cost estimates
  • Spend at least 70% of working hours on billable work
  • Prepare weekly report
  • Attend 1-1 meeting with Engineering Director
  • Qualifications :

  • 4 Year College Technical Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 10 or more years technical knowledge / experience with custom automation, including design and build activities, preferred
  • 10 or more years knowledge / experience with SolidWorks, preferred.
  • Prior management / supervisory or project engineering responsibility of 1+ years preferred.
  • Personal computer literate (i.e., Excel, Word, Project, Windows).
  • In-depth training / experience in all aspects of design, definition, project, fabrication, and construction
  • Proven to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Strong decision-making capabilities and high accountability
  • Strong communication (oral, written, and listening) and collaboration skills.
