SCHOOL COUNSELOR

The School Counselor utilizes leadership, advocacy and collaboration to promote students success, provide preventative services and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career and personal / Social development for all students. The counselor will consult and collaborate effectively with parents / guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational / community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree is required.
  • Hold a Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Guidance Counselor (NT) Endorsement OR a School Guidance Counselor License issued by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE)
  • Completion of a Michigan Department of Education (MDE) mandated clock hour internship with school-aged pupils under the supervision of a person who is a counselor educator in an approved school counseling program. At least half of the mandated clock hours shall be in a school setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality support that aligns with the District's educational vision and mission.
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Coordinate ongoing systemic activities designed to assist students in establishing personal goals and developing future plans.
  • Provide responsive services designed to meet students' immediate needs and concerns. Responsive services may include counseling in individual or small-group settings or crisis response.
  • Provide indirect services on behalf of students as a result of the school counselors' interactions with others including referrals for additional assistance, consultation and collaboration with parents, teachers, other educators and community organizations.
  • Use available Technology / community resources to enhance school counseling program.
  • Monitor student activities when appropriate
  • Implement an effective referral and follow up process
  • Identify cases involving domestic abuse or other family problems affecting students' development
  • Research and provide special services programs and classes to students and parents i.e. alcohol and drug prevention, anti-bullying, parenting in a digital world, etc.
  • Provide assistance with conflict resolution and crisis intervention to students when difficult situations occur at school or home.
  • Encourage parents / students to seek additional assistance from outside mental health agencies, when necessary.
  • Observe and evaluate student's performance, classroom behavior, social development and physical health.
  • Participate on Student Assistance Team (SAT) with district support services staff.
  • Serve on the School Improvement Team and participate in other staff development activities.
  • Consistently support and uphold school policies and procedures. Support the school and its leadership.
  • Model self-discipline and ethical behavior. Present self in a professional manner through appropriate dress, communication techniques and demeanor.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents and others.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by Principal or designee.
