RESPONSIBILITIES :

The primary concern of an Outrider is to make every effort to insure the safety of horse, riders, pony persons, gate crew and other participants on the racetrack. Be knowledgeable of Remington Park policies and procedures concerning safety and protocols on the racetrack and surrounding areas.

SPECIFIC DUTIES :

The primary duty of an outrider is to support and follow the directions of the Head Outrider in the execution of the Head Outrider’s duties and responsibilities.

On race days :

  • Be responsible for escorting the horses from the saddling paddock through the post parade, warming up and to starting gate at post time in a timely and orderly fashion.
  • Maintain constant radio communications with the stewards and starting gate.
  • Position the outriders on the race track to be able to catch loose horses as safely as possible before they injure themselves or others.
  • Report any horses that appear to may have a soundness problem to the track veterinarian.
  • Refer unruly horses to the Stewards for possible placement on the Stewards’ List.
  • Assist the Track Veterinarian in the event of an injured horse on the racetrack.
  • In close cooperation and communication with the Track Superintendent, monitor track conditions for safety.
  • Work with pony riders to ensure compliance with Remington Park policies and procedures, including the uniform dress code, and including applicable OHRC Rules and Regulations.

On training days :

  • Whenever the race track is open for training, outriders are required to be monitoring the activity of the horses and riders.
  • The track is usually open for training 6 to 10 each morning with a half-hour break for harrowing.
  • The outriders must clear the track for the break in a timely manner.
  • Position the outriders on the race track to be able to catch loose horses as safely as possible before they injure themselves or others.
  • In the case of a loose horse, the outriders immediately implement safety procedures through radio communications with the clocker and starting gate crew to close the track and flash red light or siren until the loose horse is captured.
  • In the case of an injured horse and / or rider, the outriders immediately implement safety procedures through radio communications with the clocker, starting gate crew to close the track and flash red light or siren; protect downed horse and rider from other horses and riders; request horse ambulance and / or human ambulance as necessary.
  • Monitor track conditions for safety in close cooperation and communication with the Track Superintendent.
  • In close cooperation and communication with the Track Superintendent, monitor track conditions for safety and request maintenance after ambulance(s) leaves the racetrack.
