  • Responsibilities

    Perform forensic examinations of individuals who have been sexually assaulted and provide related patient care and referrals.

  • Take a medical history and account of the assault from the patient. Assess the patient's psychological condition and performs physical examination.
  • Collect and preserve all evidence, collects relevant specimens and documents findings.
  • Provide direct nursing care of injuries and prophylactic medications. Refer to appropriate personnel / facility for further treatment as necessary.
  • Communicate with victims and their families regarding evidence collection, treatment recommendations and reporting to law enforcement (except in cases of mandated reporting). Provide victim advocacy and / or expert testimony in court trials.
  • Requirements

    Licensure / Certification / Registration :

    Required Credential(s) :

  • BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
  • Registered Nurse credentialed from the Tennessee Board of Nursing obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
  • Preferred Credential(s) :

  • Certification specializing in Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.
  • Education :

  • Diploma from an accredited school / college of nursing required. Completion of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training SANE-A within 12 months and completion of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training SANE-P within 16 months, if applicable.
