Job description

The City of Shrewsbury is now accepting applications for a full-time Property Maintenance Inspector / Building Inspector. The City of Shrewsbury is looking for an entry level candidate that is willing and able to learn and grow.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the direct supervision of the Mayor, is responsible for conducting the enforcement of building, zoning, and property maintenance codes. Performs technical work in enforcing building and zoning ordinances.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the supervision of the Mayor and the Building Commissioner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The requisite duties, responsibilities and expectations include, but are not limited to the following items :

  • Inspect 1 and 2 family rental properties for compliance with The City of Shrewsbury Property Maintenance Code
  • Applies specialized knowledge in the enforcement of numerous municipal ordinances pertaining to zoning, building codes, property maintenance, as set forth in the Shrewsbury Municipal Code and ICC codes.
  • Performs inspections of construction work to ensure compliance with approved plans, applicable codes, and safety regulations. Issues stop-work notices or violations when necessary.
  • Investigates complaints regarding code violations, property maintenance concerns, and unsafe structures, issues warnings, correction notices, citations, and court summons as necessary.
  • Attends Municipal Court to represent the City for matters related to code enforcement and building violations.
  • Produces official letters, reports, notices, and correspondence regarding zoning compliance, violations, and corrective actions.
  • Works cooperatively with the Fire Department to enforce and review fire prevention codes and inspect buildings for fire safety compliance.
  • Coordinates with the Building Commissioner and the Building & Housing Clerk, and other relevant staff to ensure efficient departmental operations.
  • Advises residents, businesses, property owners, developers, contractors, and public officials on building regulations, zoning ordinances, and compliance matters.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records, reports, and documents related to inspections, permits, enforcement actions, and violations.
  • Participates in or coordinates special projects as assigned by the Mayor.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

Graduation from a general or technical high school plus completion of two years college level course work in architecture, civil engineering, or a related field preferred. Progressively responsible experience with building codes, including a thorough understanding of construction and regulatory inspection. Ability to possess Property Maintenance Code certification within the first six months and at least two additional inspection certifications within the first two years. Valid Motor Vehicle Operators License required.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Personal computer, permit software, word processing, email applications, copy machines, printers, calculators, ladders, and standard inspection tools.

SALARY RANGE :

Min $65,000 Max $75,000.00 per year, dependent on qualifications
