Job description

Overview

Build, maintain, repair, and inspect intermodal equipment by performing the following du­ties.

Shift 9am - 5pm Tuesday - Saturday, Days off Sunday / Monday

Initial pay between $25.30 / hr - $28.47 / hr based off experience. Salary will increase to $31.63 / hr once qualified (typically takes 6 months to a year)

Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, dismantle, paint, upholster, and inspect all intermodal equipment.
  • Inspect and measure parts to detect wear, misalignment, or other prob­lems.
  • Bench carpenter work.
  • Pipe and inspection work in connection with air brake equipment on intermodal equipment .
  • Applying patented metal roofing. Operating punches and shears.
  • Painting, varnishing, surfacing, decorating, lettering, cutting sten­cils, and removing paint.
  • Performs intermodal inspections.
  • Performs oxy‑acetylene, thermit, and electric welding.
  • Visually inspects and tests machinery and equipment.
  • Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect mal­func­tion and discusses machine operation variations with supervi­sors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problem or repair machine.
  • Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of ma­chin­ery.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfacto­rily. EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE

Associate’s degree ( in applied sciences with emphasis on me­chan­i­cal applications or equivalent experience as a rail car inspector or re­pairer may be considered in lieu of the . degree at the discretion of the General Mechanical Superinten­dent; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write rou­tine reports and correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, us­ing whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to com­pute rate, ratio, and percent.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions fur­nished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with prob­lems involving several concrete variables in standardized situa­tions.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must be familiar with AAR, FRA, and DOT rules and regulations; must be able to speak and write English; must be qualified welder. Must be able to bill Intermodal repair per AAR billing.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, OR REGISTRATIONS

Must have current driver’s license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The em­ployee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Must have essential tools-of-the trade as listed below :

  • Open and box end wrenches (size 3 / 16" to 1")
  • 1 / 2" drive socket set with sockets to 1-1 / 8"
  • Key bar
