JOB PURPOSE :
Must currently be enrolled as a student at Lewis & Clark Law School. One of the most important duties of a Teaching Fellow is to act as a peer counselor for first-year students. This task includes advising students about such things as surviving the first year of law school, studying for finals, and selecting courses for the second year. More generally, Teaching Fellows are a calming voice of experience, willing to show new students how things work at Lewis & Clark and in Lawyering classes.
Another important role of a Teaching Fellow is to offer help to students with Lawyering coursework. This may include reviewing preliminary drafts or outlines of written assignments, answering citation questions, or suggesting research strategies. Teaching Fellows are also involved with oral arguments, helping prepare students through practice rounds and then judging their final oral arguments at the end of the semester.
Teaching Fellows also work closely with Lawyering professors to discuss upcoming assignments, student concerns, and other matters involving the Lawyering program. Many Teaching Fellows also work closely with their assigned professors to create class assignments, including creating fall research memo assignments and spring brief problems. Lawyering professors will provide Teaching Fellows with training about working with students, giving feedback, and helping prepare students for oral argument.
Teaching Fellows are required to attend Lawyering classes at least once per week. Regular attendance gives students a chance to get to know their Teaching Fellows and allows Teaching Fellows to stay in touch with class discussions and assignments. Consequently, Teaching Fellow candidates should consider Lawyering class times when designing their own class schedules.
