Sustainability Coordinator Assistant
GENERAL SUMMARY :
The Sustainability Coordinator Assistant position with Common Earth Gardens (CEG), a program of Catholic Charities of Louisville, Inc. The position reports directly to the CEG Garden Programs Manager (GPM). This contract position is responsible for helping to increase knowledge and use of conservation farming practices within the international community in Louisville by assisting the GPM in facilitating educational workshops, providing 1 : 1 support to gardeners, including management of the wildlife habitats at sites and coordinating volunteer workdays. This position will also support GPM with other tasks as assigned. The Sustainability Coordinator Assistant is expected to be familiar with aspects of farming and urban gardening.
Responsibilities :
- Promote water conservation practices through partnering with experts to host educational workshops on low irrigation production at garden sites, including assisting gardeners with the installation of drip tape irrigation systems at sites.
- Promote gardening practices that protect and enhance soil fertility through partnering with experts to host workshops at garden sites.
- Provide 1 : 1 support on sustainable farming practices (soil health and water conservation) to growers at community garden sites.
- Assist CEG staff with the installation of rain catchment systems.
- Support CEG staff in developing and managing educational conservation demonstration garden plots.
- Assist Lands Manager in caring and maintaining pollinator gardens and fruit orchards at the community garden sites.
- Lead the planning and implementation of new pollinator gardens and tree plantings.
- Manage volunteer groups for community garden development projects.
- Assist the Garden Programs Manager by attending gardener engagement events.
- Other duties may be assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
This work is performed both in an office and outdoor settings.
EFFORT :
MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT :
BCS walk-behind tractor, small tillers, garden hand tools, herbicide, computer, printer, copy machine, scanner.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE : High School diploma or equivalent and at least 2 years of urban agriculture, farming, and / or community organizing experience. Experience working in a multicultural setting or with diverse populations. Bilingual abilities are a plus.
