Job Overview
Reports to Associate Director of Operations, Science & Engineering Libraries
The Service Coordinator for the Library and Oesper History of Chemistry Museum is a key staff member responsible for providing support to the Oesper Museum and Library for the History of Chemistry. This position also provides support for the broader Science and Engineering Libraries unit, particularly the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) Library. This position requires a versatile professional who can manage operational tasks, engage in public services, and contribute to the preservation, documentation and promotion of special collections.
Essential Functions
- Serve as the primary onsite staff presence during designated museum open hours.
- Coordinate and schedule tour requests and museum visits.
- Compile statistics and prepare reports on user engagement and museum collections.
- Upload and manage research materials into the digital repository including publications of the museum and the SEL broadly.
- Promote the museum through the creation of print and electronic library publications, and blog posts, user guides and research guides. Maintain and enhance the museum's external presence including website and signage.
- Assist SEL Librarians and others with rotating and permanent physical and digital exhibits highlighting the museum collections and the broader collections of SEL.
- Collaborate on digitization, digital object management and metadata description in digital repositories and exhibit platforms (e.g., Omeka, JSTOR).
- Process new books, journals and other acquisitions for the Museum and other SEL collections.
- Oversee Museum display and library stacks maintenance, including shifting, weeding, and inventory.
- Evaluate gift materials and prepare recommendations for collection decisions.
- Assess library and museum materials for preservation and conservation treatments.
- Supervise student assistants providing Museum and special collections support.
- Provide backup support for service desk operations.
- Provide support for other distinctive and special collections in the SEL, including CEAS historical collections, and the Neil Armstrong archive.
Required Education
