The City of Falls Church is recruiting for a permanent, full-time (40 hours per week) Public Safety Aide. Public Safety Aides are unarmed, civilian police employees with no arrest powers primarily focused on parking enforcement and school crossings. The incumbent for this position will work in the police department for the City of Falls Church, Virginia. The City of Falls Church is seeking dynamic and goal-driven employees who are motivated to take on today's greatest challenges and rewards in the field of local public service. Public Safety Aides are unarmed civilian police employees with no arrest powers.
The incumbent will be responsible for working shiftwork of intermediate difficulty in performing paraprofessional and technical duties within the Police Department.
Responsibilities
The Public Safety Aide is primarily responsible for traffic safety, customer service, parking enforcement and school crossing duties. The responsibilities include assisting sworn public safety officers in the field, enforcing the City’s parking regulations, and ensuring safe and clear passage for children to and from public schools. Additional duties include checking vehicle display of property tax stickers, impounding and releasing vehicles impounded by the Police Department, assisting City Government with security and customer support functions at City facilities. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to :
- Assists the Police Department with various special events, transporting, deploying and retrieving traffic cones and portable traffic signs in designated areas, reporting traffic hazards or violators to the Police Department, which can lead to frequent public contact at times in confrontational situations.
- Operates an assigned motor vehicle, towing equipment trailer, walk several blocks at a time, bend and lift portable road signs, and stack traffic cones from and to vehicles or trailers weighing 40 pounds or more, deploy traffic cones or portable road signs along the roadway.
- Works outdoors in all types of weather for extended periods.
- Regulates vehicular traffic at designated crossings to allow children to cross safely; and regulates children using the crossing to assure that they conform to traffic regulations.
- Assists bus drivers, parents, vehicle operators, police, and school staff to ensure a safe and orderly school ingress and egress process; takes appropriate action with children who fail to cooperate and reports such action as required.
- Attends meetings, gives statements, provides reports, appears and testifies in court as necessary.
- Regulates traffic at special events and non-school locations as assigned.
- Performs miscellaneous duties to assist with other department activities.
- Performs accurate data collection and entry into computers, and completes violation and summonses.
- Prepares various reports, and utilizes police communication equipment.
- Exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative.
- Performs related tasks as required.
