The City of Falls Church is recruiting for a permanent, full-time (40 hours per week) Public Safety Aide. Public Safety Aides are unarmed, civilian police employees with no arrest powers primarily focused on parking enforcement and school crossings. The incumbent for this position will work in the police department for the City of Falls Church, Virginia. The City of Falls Church is seeking dynamic and goal-driven employees who are motivated to take on today's greatest challenges and rewards in the field of local public service. Employees who are passionate about making a difference and achieving our mission : ensure the highest quality of public safety services with the utmost regard for the sanctity of life through integrity and respect for human rights, the Constitution of the United States, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and its laws. Public Safety Aides are unarmed civilian police employees with no arrest powers.

The incumbent will be responsible for working shiftwork of intermediate difficulty in performing paraprofessional and technical duties within the Police Department.

Responsibilities

The Public Safety Aide is primarily responsible for traffic safety, customer service, parking enforcement and school crossing duties. The responsibilities include assisting sworn public safety officers in the field, enforcing the City’s parking regulations, and ensuring safe and clear passage for children to and from public schools. Additional duties include checking vehicle display of property tax stickers, impounding and releasing vehicles impounded by the Police Department, assisting City Government with security and customer support functions at City facilities. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

  • Assists the Police Department with various special events, transporting, deploying and retrieving traffic cones and portable traffic signs in designated areas, reporting traffic hazards or violators to the Police Department, which can lead to frequent public contact at times in confrontational situations.
  • Operates an assigned motor vehicle, towing equipment trailer, walk several blocks at a time, bend and lift portable road signs, and stack traffic cones from and to vehicles or trailers weighing 40 pounds or more, deploy traffic cones or portable road signs along the roadway.
  • Works outdoors in all types of weather for extended periods.
  • Regulates vehicular traffic at designated crossings to allow children to cross safely; and regulates children using the crossing to assure that they conform to traffic regulations.
  • Assists bus drivers, parents, vehicle operators, police, and school staff to ensure a safe and orderly school ingress and egress process; takes appropriate action with children who fail to cooperate and reports such action as required.
  • Attends meetings, gives statements, provides reports, appears and testifies in court as necessary.
  • Regulates traffic at special events and non-school locations as assigned.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties to assist with other department activities.
  • Performs accurate data collection and entry into computers, and completes violation and summonses.
  • Prepares various reports, and utilizes police communication equipment.
  • Exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required, vocational school, or additional higher education preferred.
  • Possess at least one (1) year public contact experience.
  • Possess or obtain by the time of appointment : a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Applicant’s privilege to operate a motor vehicle must not be suspended or revoked at the time of appointment, must have no “Driving Under the Influence” convictions three years previous to the date of applicant’s date of appointment, must have no Reckless Driving convictions three years previous to the date of applicant’s date of appointment, and or no negative driving points higher than four points on the applicant’s driving record from any state maintaining a driver’s license record of the applicant prior to the date of appointment of the applicant.
  • Be of good moral character and have never been convicted of a felony; or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, perjury, or false statement.
  • Successfully complete a background investigation including a polygraph examination.
  • Pass a physical exam, including testing for the presence of unlawful drugs.
  • Be able to successfully complete the Public Safety Aide training and certifications and maintain all requirements for the Public Safety Aide position.
  • Special Requirements

    The following information is provided to you in anticipation of your application for the position of Public Safety Aide with the City of Falls Church. The Falls Church Police Department has constantly maintained the highest standards in the selection of personnel who will represent the City of Falls Church. All applicants for the Falls Church Police Department should be aware of these standards and the several phases of the selection process before attempting to qualify for the position. This examination will evaluate the applicant's honesty and integrity. Areas of questioning will include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Any past criminal activity on the part of the applicant.
  • Completeness and truthfulness of all statements made during the selection process.
  • Any past or present use of drugs.
  • The present standards of the Falls Church Police Department would disqualify an applicant if any of the following were indicated as a result of the review of the application packet, polygraph examination or background investigation.

    NOTE : These are guidelines and are not limited to the drugs listed in this package. A background investigation will be conducted as part of the testing process to determine if the "Moral Character" of the candidate is appropriate for employment as a Public Safety Aide. "Moral Character" is determined by examination of the life experiences of the candidate including, but not limited to, the above listed factors. Other factors, such as past illegal drug use, history of arrest, incidents of theft, prior work and driving history, will also be considered.
