We are seeking a Campus Police Sergeant who will provide services to the Homewood Campus and designated off-campus University facilities and activities. Function in concert with the University's various other service-oriented personnel in providing for a safe and secure environment in which students, faculty, and staff may enjoy rewarding academic and social life experiences
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned areas on foot, bicycle, Segway Human Transporters, T-3 Patrol Vehicles or any other vehicles assigned for patrolling.
- Actively participate in crime prevention and community policing activities.
- Respond to routine and emergency calls for various types of service and take action as appropriate to support the on-duty Patrol Shift as needed.
- Conduct preliminary investigations and maintain confidentiality while writing clear, concise and accurate reports.
- Direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic and enforce campus parking regulations as needed.
- Provide escorts and other general services as needed to support the on-duty Patrol Shift. Work flexible shifts and any day of the week that includes holidays or weekends to assist with operational and special event assignments.
- Use various computers and other equipment as a routine function of this position.
- Perform other security related services for the faculty, staff, students, and visitors of The Johns Hopkins University as may be necessary.
- Provide security for the University's on-and off-campus property, facilities, activities.
- Serve as a backup to the Shift Lieutenant (officer in charge of the shift) as needed.
- Supervises, trains and provides guidance to subordinate personnel.
- Directs and leads subordinates in enforcing criminal laws and University's policies and procedures.
- Ensures subordinate compliance with Campus Safety and Security rules, policies, and regulations.
- Supervises special assignments and details as required.
- Coordinates and cooperates with Campus Safety and Security Command Staff in the preliminary and follow-up investigations of complaints, reported criminal offenses, and disruptions.
- Coordinates preliminary investigative activities at a crime scene or significant or unusual event until the arrival of an investigative entity.
- Communicates and maintains good relations with the faculty, staff, students, public, other law enforcement agencies, and public officials.
- Must be able to function in keeping with a community-oriented value-based philosophy.
- Must be trained and certified to carry and operate any weapons or devices when appropriate (i.e., less-lethal weapons, OC Spray, collapsible baton, handcuffs etc.) assigned to enable the officer(s) to mitigate a threatening incident or event on property owned or leased by the university located in the State of Maryland.
- Application for a special police officer commission will be made after hire and during the initial training period. The University will cover any expenses related to the application for the commission and permit. Denial by the Maryland State Police of a commission or permit, or subsequent revocation of those privileges, may result in dismissal.
