THOR Solutions is actively seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technician (Hydraulics) with U.S. Navy shipboard experience to provide full-time support for U.S. Naval shipboard auxiliary equipment at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) in  Norfolk, VA.

Typical Responsibilities : The candidate’s responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) performing or supporting the following actions :

  • Provide Full-Time Onsite Support as well as Surge Support as tasked for the following Code 254 cognizant equipment.
  • Conduct Fleet Technical Assistance on-site or via distance support as required, to include engineering / technical evaluations, equipment functional checks, troubleshooting, test, analysis, and equipment repairs as tasked.
  • Conduct pre-job briefings.
  • Conduct Assessments, Inspections, and Grooms determining equipment condition and out of specification settings; observe operation of the equipment by ship's force to witness the full range of performance, when possible; utilize appropriate measuring equipment to obtain data for evaluation; evaluate findings and make adjustments & repairs to the maximum extent possible during the time available.
  • Provide Onboard Maintenance Training (OBMT) to Ship's Force technicians in the operation, repair, and maintenance. Perform / provide support during shipboard auxiliary systems tasking including TSRA, INSURV and Tech Assist events.
  • Analyze and review inspection data to determine source of fault, and recommend repair, replacement, or other corrective action.
  • Suggest equipment engineering changes toward improving quality and reliability and to facilitate installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Assist with the preparation and adjudication of Departures from Specifications (DFS), Engineering Support Requests (ESRs), and review of work items / process control procedures (PCPs) when required, including development of risk assessment.
  • Report findings / discrepancies as required to the designated Team Leader and / or Branch Head of MARMC 254 via Material Assessment Form (MAF), Prisms / ETC Software, TAAS-Info, debrief and / or Technical Assistance Visit Report (TAVR).

Location :  Primarily onsite at Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) in Norfolk, VA.

Security Clearance Requirements :

  • Must already possess an active or interim SECRET security clearance and maintain it for the duration of employment.
  • Required Education, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities :

  • High school diploma / GED equivalent.
  • At least five (5) years of recent, relevant hands-on mechanical experience within the last seven (7) years in the operation, troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, and assessing of US Navy Auxiliary equipment including, but not limited to :
  • Shipboard Hydraulic Systems, Hydraulic Controls Systems, Steering Systems, Anchor Windlass Systems, and Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) Systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret wiring diagrams, control schematics and plans and the ability as Subject Matter Expert (SME) to troubleshoot, analyze and provide distance support for listed equipment.
  • Ability to utilize computers including the Microsoft Office Suite for compiling information for reports and history files and transfer digital pictures from camera to computer and enhance as required and label them for report purposes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Travel Requirements :

  • Up to 10% travel is anticipated.
  • Typical Physical Activity :

  • Primarily desk / computer work in an office environment. May involve : repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront / shipboard environments. May involve : traversing shipboard environments (e.g. confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.
