The Biology department currently has 11 full-time faculty members and offers 70+ sections each semester, by far the largest science department at the college.
The department offers courses in Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology, Marine Biology, Cellular / Molecular Biology, Evolutionary / Organismal Biology, Genetics, Ecology, Human Biology, Environmental Biology, and General Biology. Our courses often serve as gateway courses for many highly regarded Health Science programs, including several at the college such as Mortuary Science, Dental Hygiene, Nursing, and other allied health and health sciences.
The Biology program is housed in a new building that offers cutting-edge and state-of-the-art equipment and lab facilities. The department is proud of its expansion and adoption of courses in hybrid formats and asynchronous online lectures.
The department prides itself on having a strong, active, innovative, and collegial faculty that is open to new ideas and teaching approaches. The Biology department enjoys a close relationship with the college’s growing (STEM)2 student support program and its MESA program. Job Description :
Teach non-majors general biology lecture and laboratory courses and related courses to a diverse student population.
Actively participate in budget planning, scheduling, outreach, and collective decision-making.
Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.
Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.
Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.
Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.
Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.
Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.
Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.
Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and / or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.
Work cooperatively with staff and students.
Evening and / or weekend assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications :
Master’s in any biological science
Bachelor’s in any biological science
AND Master’s in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science
Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area.
The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

Desirable Qualifications :
College-level teaching experience in the area of General Biology or other biological sciences.
Experience with contemporary laboratory techniques and teaching methods used in basic laboratory sciences.
Knowledge and use of modern technologies and computerized applications in teaching.
Expertise in culturally responsive teaching in biology, particularly how it relates to the relevance of biology to students lives, interests, and communities; demonstrated ability to address equity gaps of underrepresented groups within biology.
