Job description
JOB SUMMARY
Under general direction provides reference and reader'sadvisory services to Library users and assists with the development andprovision of library programming. This position is responsible forteaching adult students enrolled in English (ESL) or High School Equivalency(HSE) classes. Duties will include teaching classes, lesson planning, andcreating syllabi that adheres to content standards.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :
Provide reference and reader's advisory service to the public by phone, in person, by mail or electronic media using basic interview skills, interpreting Library policy and procedures, and applying knowledge of basic research techniques to access the library's print and electronic collections. Develop and execute basic search strategies to locate information in print collections and electronic-based media. Provide assistance and explain or demonstrate the use of various Library collections or equipment normally used in delivering library service. Provide access to information through developing, contributing to, or assisting in the content and design of informational publications and web page resources.
Apply basic knowledge of literature, databases, other print, or non-print materials, and learning styles to provide programs, story times including appropriate activities, training classes or other patron-oriented activities. Participate in outreach activities to community organizations, schools, retirement centers and other groups to promote the development of a lifelong desire to read and learn.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS :
Process and file new materials using knowledge of established library policies and procedures and / or library classification and cataloging systems (Dewey Decimal classification, Superintendent of Documents (SUDoc) classification and other alpha-numeric systems).
Return book and non-book materials to shelves and cabinets using knowledge of Dewey Decimal classification, Superintendent of Documents classification, and other alpha / numeric filing systems in order to interfile them with related materials.
Assist patrons with all facets of the circulation services; communicate orally and in writing using knowledge of library policies and procedures; perform simple arithmetic calculations using standard office equipment, locate and retrieve books and other library materials from files and on shelves.
Assist with collection development as assigned including soliciting patron input; checking / searching online databases, catalogs, booklists, patron suggestion lists, various computer printouts and / or standard bibliographies using knowledge of bibliographic search procedures; evaluate library materials for possible deselection (weeding) based on physical condition and / or usage.
Assist in the collection of statistics using various methods and instruments.
Works with librarians to plan and implement library programs.
On a non-typical basis, incumbent may perform other additional duties not listed in this description that are in alignment with the scope of essential job functions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required :
Knowledge of basic library reference skills.
Basic knowledge of various library classification schemes (Dewey Decimal, SUDoc, Library of Congress, etc.)
Knowledge of and familiarity with print sources, on-line catalogs, databases, CD-Rom, sources and remote.
Skill in teaching individuals or groups how to use information sources.
Skill in presenting information and programs to groups of all ages.
Basic skill in translating a library users' request into terminology that results in efficient searching and rapid retrieval of the information needed.
Skill in utilizing basic word processing, database, web design and spreadsheet software.
Skill in operating a personal computer, CD-Rom, multimedia workstations and successfully accessing information on the Internet.
Skill in working with others in a team approach.
Skill in thinking logically, analytically and in the abstract.
Skill in establishing rapport with library users quickly and easily.
Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including, but not limited to seeing, walking, standing, sorting, carrying, filing, and writing.
Ability to work varied schedule as necessary.
Qualifying Education and Experience :
Bachelor's Degree in areas such as Business, Liberal Arts, Education, History, Sciences, American or English Literature, Psychology, Computer Science, Information Management or Child Development.
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of a valid Texas Operator Class C License.
