Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare for and deliver instruction and perform teaching-related activities.
  • Manage the classroom / laboratory.
  • Develop curriculum and monitor and revise as appropriate to maintain course effectiveness; assist in program / department evaluation.
  • Manage equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Assess student performance.
  • Advise students on academic issues.
  • Collaborate with advisory committee in program / department area.
  • Attend departmental and institutional meetings.
  • Promote the education / training program / department, participate in efforts to recruit and retain students, and participate in efforts to promote educational opportunities at MATC.
  • Support student organizations and activities.
  • Develop relationships with business and industry.
  • Complete program / department evaluation and follow-up.
  • Maintain certification, continue professional development and stay current in field.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Educational requirements :

Bachelor’s degree in deaf-related field, such as Sign Language Interpreting, Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Vocational Rehabilitation, American Sign Language (ASL).

Occupational experience :

Must have a minimum of (3) three years (6,000 hours) of work experience as an educational sign language professional.

In addition, one of the following must be met :

  • At least one year of work experience must have occurred within the last five years; or
  • Two years of teaching in Sign Language in Education coursework at the post-secondary level within 5 years
  • Industry or vendor certification :

    Must have one of the following :

  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA ) of 3.3 or higher
  • Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) certification as granted by The Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ODHH)
  • Wisconsin Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (WisRID) in combination with a letter of recommendation
  • Licensure :   Desirable Educational Interpreter Licensure as granted by The Wisconsin Department of Public

  • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Interpreting or a Deafness related field that includes emphasis on Interpreter Education / Training.
  • Must hold one of the following certifications : NIC, CSC, CT / CI, DI or NAD.
  • Must hold a valid Wisconsin State Sign Language Interpreter Licensure.
  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years (6,000 hours) experience as a working interpreter or the equivalent.
  • Ability to use sign language fluently with a strong background in various sign methods including American Sign Language preferred.
  • Strong voice to sign and sign to voice transliterating and interpreting skills (or user of these skills) preferred.
  • Knowledge or experience with engaged and service learning strongly preferred.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively through both oral and written means.
  • Must have knowledge of assessment of student academic achievement techniques.
  • Must meet State of Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) instruction http : / / systemattic.wtcsystem.edu / certification / default.htm
  • Must meet Higher Learning Commission (HLC) standards (if applicable).
  • Must be able to relate successfully with students and staff of diverse cultural, social and educational backgrounds

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs., carry, and push up to 20 lbs. and ability pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to climb stairs and a ladder and maintain balance.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, hear and speak.
  • Sitting / Standing / Walking : 75% of time spent sitting, 20% of time standing, and 5% of time walking.
  • Essential Technology :

  • Email - Experience with an Email system (GroupWise, Outlook, Gmail…)
  • Telephone - Experience with a voice mail system
  • Computer - Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Essential Supportive Technology :

    Experience with or willingness to learn the following supportive technologies :

  • Online Information Management Systems - Experience with INFOnline or other online information management systems used for student advising, student programs, grading, class schedules and rosters
  • Blackboard - Experience with Blackboard or other web-based course - management systems
  • Technology-based Instruction - Experience with technology-based instructional delivery systems including SMART symposium, interactive touch screen monitors, LCD projectors, DVD players and / or other classroom technology
  • Emerging Technologies - Experience with emerging technologies (eg. social networking applications)
