About the Agency : The Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services (MDRS) is a state agency dedicated to helping Mississippians with disabilities to live and work independently. MDRS serves through four major programs : Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), Vocational Rehabilitation for the Blind (VRB), Office of Special Disability Programs (OSDP), and Disability Determination Services (DDS). Services also include support through Assistive Technology, the Office of Business Development and much more. About the Position : The position is with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation for the Blind (OVRB) and will function as the Home Management Instructor at Mississippi EMERGE Center located in Long Beach, Mississippi. We are seeking a dedicated and confident Home Management Instructor to teach and guide blind and visually disabled clients in mastering essential daily living activities. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in cooking, cleaning, and other practical skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively and maintain organized records. This role includes teaching, classroom management, and collaborative work within a rehabilitation center environment. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to the following :
- Maintain a well-organized classroom dedicated to teaching daily living skills, including cooking, cleaning, and budgeting.
- Monitor and manage kitchen supplies, submitting receipts for bookkeeping purposes.
- Teach students essential skills such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, doing laundry, ironing, etc.
- Maintain weekly journals of students' assignments and classwork.
- Prepare and submit monthly progress reports for students' rehabilitation counselors.
- Lead groups during cultural events.
- Support other instructors and serve as a substitute when needed.
- Act as apartment manager on a rotating basis.
- Attend and lead seminars as required.
- Employee will complete eight weeks of immersion training with full visual occlusion in the center within the first six months of employment. Prior center training equal to the same amount of time may be considered as a substitute.
What you'll need to be Successful : Knowledge of counseling techniques, vocational assessment, job placement and interviewing techniques, and community resources. Ability to provide proper and adequate instructions. Excellent communication, creativity, problem-solving, evaluation of services and time management skills; Ability to be flexible, handle multiple tasks, maintain a professional demeanor, and show empathy.
Preferred Qualifications : Typically requires a High School Diploma or high school equivalency and 3+ years of relevant experience / education and / or relevant certifications / licenses.Hiring Agency prefers : A Bachelor's Degree and 3+ years of experience in fields related to cooking and / or daily living skills.
