About the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of Literature, Media, and Communication is a multi-disciplinary program. It offers B.S. degrees in Literature, Media, and Communication and in Computational Media, M.S. degrees in Digital Media, Human Computer Interaction, and Global Media and Cultures, as well as a Ph.D. in Digital Media.

The School includes the Writing and Communication Program, the Brittain Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, minors such as Black Media Studies, Social Justice, and Science Fiction Studies, and the Institute's Communication Center which provides discipline-specific courses and communication support for campus-wide audiences. The School's Film / Media Studies minor and related Cinema@Tech resources include LMCFilms, which empowers students across the LMC curriculum with industry-standard film tools and best collaborative practices to nurture a sophisticated visual aesthetic and prepare them for success in the Georgia film industry. Job Summary

The School of Literature, Media, and Communication at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor of film production and emergent media. The successful candidate will have an active creative practice, a record of scholarship in the field, and a critical foundation for the theoretical, sociohistorical, and / or ethical aspects of film and emergent media. The successful candidate will work within an interdisciplinary environment and advocate for the growth of film and emergent media within the School of Literature, Media, and Communication, Georgia Tech, and the wider Atlanta community.

Responsibilities

This Assistant Professor will contribute to the film program within the School of Literature, Media, and Communication by teaching courses that fulfill requirements for the B.S. in Literature, Media, and Communication and the minor in film studies. The expected teaching load is 2 courses per semester, including possible courses in the BS in Computational Media. The successful candidate should demonstrate experience in and a strong commitment to teaching both introductory and advanced film courses to undergraduate students. Possible areas include : digital film and media production, transmedia storytelling, emergent media formats (such as VR and AR), animation, interactive cinema, experimental digital film and media. Opportunities to mentor and supervise doctoral students are available to a successful candidate who holds a Ph.D.

Mindful of the history and future of film and media, this successful candidate's research and practice in film production and emergent media should complement and connect the areas of specialization already present in the school. The successful candidate would bolster film-industry centered perspectives within institutional initiatives that blend arts and technology.

  • Record of research accomplishments and publications in digital cinema, film production, and / or media studies
  • Record of established and active artistic practice (with expertise in digital production technologies and workflows)
  • Experience teaching film / digital media critique, production, and post-production
  • Pedagogical agility conversant with teaching within a liberal arts college and in an interdisciplinary school in the humanities
  • Facility with digital tools that expand current course offerings and available technologies (e.g. Unreal Engine, Maya, Unity, Blender, DaVinci Resolve)
  • Expertise regarding industry-centered perspectives
  • Success in mentoring students
