Inspector V (Deputy State Fire Marshal)

The Deputy State Fire Marshal serves as the liaison between the State Fire Marshal’s Office, customers and local authorities having jurisdiction.This position prepares plans as, related to fire safety for large gatherings indoors and outdoors, and also provides customer service and outreach to entities and individuals requesting fire safety inspections.

This position :

  • Performs tasks related to fire safety.
  • Completes narrative reports to record conditions in violation of fire safety standards and suggesting methods of corrections.
  • Travels to conduct fire safety inspections.
  • Presents, assists and / or coordinates fire and life safety outreach programs.
  • Attends training and performs research necessary for professional development.
  • Testifies at administrative hearings and criminal trials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    This position requires :

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in a field related to assignment.
  • Two years of experience in fire safety or related field.
  • Earning and / or obtaining a Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) certification as a fire inspector within one year from date of hire.
  • The inspector will reside in a county within their assigned district.
  • Note :

    Education and experience relevant to position requirements may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.

    For positions that require driving as an essential function of the position :

    Skill : Operating a motor vehicle in a safe and courteous manner in compliance with traffic laws.

    Ability : Satisfy the requirements to maintain fully qualified driving status.

    Additional job details :

  • Successful completion of all training assignments, including the field training program.
  • Driving for extended periods of time and often in remote areas.
  • Extensive traveling which may require frequent overnight stays; and
  • Residing within assigned area and may require relocation to meet the operational needs of the agency.
  • Preferences for this position include :

  • Previous experience as a fire / life safety inspector.
  • Knowledge, use, and interpretation of National Fire Protection Association Codes.
  • This position requires demonstrated knowledge of :

  • State laws, rules, procedures, and regulations relevant to job requirements.
  • Fire code violations from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 1) or International Fire Code (IFC).
  • The Incident Command System (ICS).
  • The use of personal computers and Microsoft Office software.
  • This position requires demonstrated skill in :

  • Problem solving, decision making, and planning.
  • Providing customer service to the public and government entities.
  • Conducting interviews and inspections.
  • Operating a motor vehicle in a safe and courteous manner in compliance with traffic laws.
  • This position requires the demonstrated ability to :

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Apply critical thinking to evaluate, analyze and interpret information.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external customers.
  • Work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with fire service, law enforcement, the public, co-workers, agency staff and industry representatives.
  • Work outdoors, often under adverse weather conditions.
  • Drive for extended periods of time, often in remote areas.
  • Satisfy the requirements to maintain fully qualified driving status.
  • Do heavy lifting, walking, pushing, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and reaching.
