FACULTY POSITION AT SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, UC SAN DIEGO - Deep-Sea Benthic Biologist
The University of California, San Diego invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO, ). This position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level. We seek a motivated, broad-thinking scientist and educator to establish a vigorous research program and provide intellectual leadership in their field while complementing existing expertise at SIO and other UC San Diego departments. SIO is a world-renowned institution for earth and ocean science research with approximately 200 principal investigators. We invite applicants with demonstrated ability in original research in biology and the deep-sea floor. The successful candidate could work in multiple deep-water benthic settings, including, but not limited to, hydrothermal vents, seeps, trenches, seamounts, submarine canyons, or abyssal plains. Areas of interest could include benthic ecology, interactions with the seafloor, benthic-pelagic coupling, physiology or developmental biology of metazoans in deep-sea habitats, deep-sea microbial biology, or human impacts / influences on benthic ecosystem processes and services. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work integrates across disciplines, embraces cutting-edge methodologies, and addresses fundamental questions about life in deep-sea habitats. We especially welcome candidates who will develop a vibrant seagoing research program and incorporate diverse technological approaches. The candidate will also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring. Responsibilities include developing and teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Of particular interest are courses on deep-sea biology.
