Position Description

The Department of Counselor Education at San Jose State University values diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Our excellence in research, teaching, and service can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. We anticipate welcoming one new tenure-track faculty colleague beginning in the 2025-26 Academic Year at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The Department of Counselor Education is one of seven departments in the Connie L. Lurie College of Education, whose faculty, students, staff, alumni, and community partners are dedicated to creating meaningful, equitable, and inclusive learning experiences for our diverse community. We take an emancipatory stance in our teaching, research, and service activities. In collaboration with our partners across campus and in the community, we strive to make an impact by transforming our schools and communities and shaping our society. Lurie College includes approximately 55 tenured / tenure-track faculty, 100 lecturers, 20 staff, and 1,800 students across seven different departments. We seek colleagues who are dedicated to critically engaging in their teaching and research; and who see strength in the diversity of our student community.

We seek candidates with professional experience in mental health counseling and counseling within K-12 and / or postsecondary educational settings, a record of successful teaching experience at the college level, a demonstrated ability to effectively partner with mental health settings, schools and / or colleges, an established record of scholarship, and a demonstrated ability of successful mentoring of students in research and professional development. Ideally, the new colleague will have expertise and experience in clinical counseling and counseling in educational settings; and should be skilled and demonstrably committed to supporting the development, well-being, and success of students whose racial and / or gender / sexual identities remain underserved in clinical, K-12, and postsecondary education sectors.

SJSU enrolls more than 36,000 students, many of whom are historically underserved, and around 45% are first-generation and 38% are Pell-recipients. SJSU is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) Serving Institution. The university's commitment to social justice extends from its vibrant, inclusive campus to an international network of over 275,000 alumni. As such, San Jose State is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty so our disciplines, students, and the community can benefit from multiple ethnic and gender perspectives.

The Department offers courses leading to a Master of Arts degree in Counseling and Guidance. Students have the option to complete preparatory courses and fieldwork to be eligible to pursue licensure as an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC) after graduation. Students also have the option to add courses and fieldwork leading for eligibility for the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) School Counseling Credential (required to work as K-12 School Counselors in California public schools), and a Child Welfare & Attendance Authorization. Our students pursue careers in school counseling, clinical counseling, and educational counseling as well as in counseling-adjacent settings (e.g., human resources).

Accordingly, our collegial, interdisciplinary, professionally-engaged, and multiculturally-skilled faculty work closely with students to build effective counseling and assessment skills, nurture reflective thinking and inter-cultural awareness, and provide the experiences students need to become dynamic educational and community-engaged leaders committed to advocacy, social justice, and life-long learning (see : counselored / ).

Successful candidates will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and / or service. We ask that all applicants include a Diversity Statement with their application package.
