Summary
General Excavating is an award-winning contractor serving public and private owners throughout the state of Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. General Excavating specializes in the construction of; underground utilities, environmental remediation, excavation shoring, directional drilling, hydro-excavation, and heavy civil including bridge and concrete structures.
The Lead Estimator will assist with construction projects that generate profits for the company. The ideal candidate collects and analyzes data to provide accurate estimate information and secure work opportunities that aid in overall operations and strategic planning. This role provides support to the project management team on construction project sites from procurement through final acceptance, and maximizes profits and cost controls to maintain stability and growth of the organization by performing the following duties :
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepares cost estimates at various stages of design from budget to detailed take-off and pricing.
- Prepares or reviews reports on progress and costs related to materials, equipment and labor used and adjusts work schedules as indicated by reports.
- Negotiates construction prices with subcontractors for competitive bidding.
- Obtains multiple quotes for materials and subcontracted items and selects most suitable quote to build work.
- Drafts proposals that accurately detail cost of performing individual jobs including pricing for materials, subcontractors and schedules.
- Visits jobsites prior to bid day in order to do understand worksite conditions and construction activities necessary to build accurate estimates.
- Seeks out new work opportunities and markets and collects all pertinent documents including plans and specifications.
- Studies specifications and plans to coordinate procedures for appropriate construction methods based on project start and completion.
- Attends pre-bid, pre-construction, board meetings, and bid openings, taking note of project schedules and requirements and advocating for the Company.
- Processes and codes invoices and ensures time, materials and equipment are allocated appropriately to accurately track job costs.
- Assists field staff with proper claiming of labor, equipment and materials.
- Visits jobsites and gathers photos and videos of work site prior to bidding job and during all construction phases to support field operations and ensuring accurate estimating and job costing.
- Supports project management team in review of department financials and accurately forecasts job costs on a monthly basis.
- Prepares submittals for approval and confirms materials, equipment, construction methods meet contract requirements and ensures shop drawings are approved per project specifications.
- Estimates and manages change orders to accurately account for altered schedules, labor, and equipment needs. Anticipates changes in working conditions and project requirements for successful completion and profitability.
- Assist Project Manager with production tracking on active projects, as needed.
- Monitors compliance with specific project safety requirements and ensures corrective measures are implemented as necessary.
- Enforces compliance with administrative policies, procedures, safety rules and governmental regulations.
- Other duties as required.
Education and Work Experience Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in construction management or related field.
Three (3) years minimum related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proficient with shop drawing submittal process.
Experience developing a project schedule based on estimated manhours in estimate.
Certificates and Licensing
Must have a valid driver's license with clean driving record.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract multiply and divide. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance. Ability to read a tape measure and convert inches into tenths.
