Position Overview

City Year Kansas City seeks a collaborative and innovative Events and Communications Manager to support the City Year Kansas City Development Department in conveying the power of City Year Kansas City’s service through marketing materials and events to key stakeholders. The Events and Communications Manager designs, executes, and evaluates events that engage stakeholders in meaningful action and dialogue in support of the site, with specific focus on building awareness, engaging the community, raising increased resources, and ultimately, serving more students.

The Events and Communications Manager will also provide support to the site by writing and designing collateral, including one-pagers, reports, electronic newsletters, and invitations. The position will be the primary driver of City Year Kansas City’s social media strategy. As a member of the Development Department, collaboration with City Year Kansas City’s Development Director will be imperative.

The starting salary for this position is $54,000. This is a primarily in-person role, with intermittent options to work remotely.

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES – EVENTS

Manage the maintenance of the events calendar, to include national and local events in collaboration with the Development Director.

Develop and manage MLK Day (annual event utilizing ~150 volunteers for a beautification project at a local school) and the Idealist Gala.

Create and maintain all pertinent event documents, including RSVP lists, vendor lists, and supply lists.

Manage e-mail, direct mail, and social media communications around the event.

In partnership with HQ and the development team, secure all event collateral including invitations, event signage, talking points, and thank you notes.

Collaborate with the Development team, site leadership, ACMs, and volunteers to articulate clear goals for the event.

Develop event staffing plans and train ACMs, staff, and volunteers on roles, as necessary.

Liaise with the vendors and / or community partners of MLK Day event and Idealist Gala.

Document and maintain records for future MLK Day and Idealist Gala.

General City Year Event Oversight

Develop and manage annual events celebrating our AmeriCorps Members’ achievements and engaging stakeholders including, but not limited to, Red Jacket Day, First Day of School Kickoff, and City Year Graduation.

Manage overall logistical planning for each event and preparation needs for AmeriCorps members, City Year staff, and / or external participants.

Secure necessary vendor contracts and monitor vendor performance to ensure City Year receives exceptional service and value.

Develop staffing plans and train staff, ACMs, and volunteers on roles, as necessary.

Oversee the event’s promotion, collateral creation, attendee outreach, and social media coverage.

RESPONSIBILITIES – DESIGN / SITE COLLATERAL

In collaboration with HQ, design collateral and content for City Year Kansas City.

Manage email and direct mail communication.

Manage giving campaign collateral including Giving Tuesday, End-of-Year, Back to School, etc.

Develop and manage event collateral.

Collaborate on annual site-specific report to be shared with annual fundraising champions.

RESPONSIBILITIES – SOCIAL MEDIA

In collaboration with HQ, act as the primary driver of City Year Kansas City’s social media strategy.

Develop and post 3x a week on Instagram / Facebook.

Develop and post 1x on LinkedIn.

Manage social media fundraising campaigns.

RESPONSIBILITIES – DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

General assistance in City Year Kansas City’s Development Department.

Manage school visit logistics including training ACMs and staff for their roles, scheduling, and school team preparation.

Assist the Development Director on logistics and ACM coordination for Team and Program Sponsor Engagements.

Collaborate with the Development Director in the engagement and recognition initiatives for board members, individual donors, and Red Jacket Society members.

Draft press releases and media advisories.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Belonging, Inclusion, and Equity (DBIE) work, including desire to continue equity-based and anti-racist learning and practices at City Year.

1-3 years of professional experience in event management, marketing, and / or communications.

Knowledge of Adobe InDesign and / or Canva a plus.

Able to develop and execute events through excellent project management and organization skills.

Strong communications, writing, and editing skills to ensure connectivity to mission and appropriate style and usage.

Able to use brand and storytelling strategically to inspire diverse audiences.

Commitment to and experience with community service, national service, and / or the development of young people as leaders.

Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines and take initiative in managing several projects with the utmost attention to detail.

Demonstrated ability to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds, interests, and skills.

Proven interpersonal skills with an ability to build capacity in peers.

Solution-oriented critical thinker with strong problem-solving skills and a positive attitude.

Ability to work well independently and in a collaborative team environment.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Platforms, including Excel.
