Position Summary
The Carpenter performs the full range of skilled carpentry work including new construction, remodeling of existing spaces, and repair and maintenance work. Incumbent builds, remodels and repairs various types of facilities, buildings, offices, classrooms, restrooms, sheds, scaffolds, forms, frames, fences, and other structures. Renovates existing spaces, adding or removing windows, doors, and walls; installing wall covering, ceilings and floors. Incumbent installs and repairs drywall, ceiling and floor tiles; constructs cabinets, counters, shelves, benches, partitions; installs and repairs modular furniture; installs and repairs door and window frames; hangs doors and installs windows. Installs signs, display boards, blinds, fixtures (soap and paper goods dispensers, ; repairs furnishings (tables, chairs, desks, lab benches, .
The Carpenter provides a proactive and comprehensive preventive maintenance program for the University. Participates in the efficient and successful completion of projects while respecting the learning environment and the educational mission of the university. Responds to emergencies to protect life-safety, property, the educational mission, and the reputation of San Diego State University.
This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent / probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Work hours are Monday – Friday, 6 : 00 . to 2 : 30 ., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Department Summary
SDSU Facilities services is a customer service-based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Education and Experience
Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through the completion of a carpenter’s apprenticeship program.
Key Qualifications
- Ability to work unsupervised on a variety of job tasks from simple to complex and coordinate multiple projects.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical work utilizing mechanical aptitude and motor coordination.
- Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position; must be able to follow simple written and oral instructions.
- Ability to work independently or as a member of a team; consult and work with other trades workers; and develop and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to analyze situations, procedures and work methods, and exercise appropriate judgment in resolving problems and establishing priorities and work methods.
- Ability to be flexible and respond to changes in demands for service and priorities.
- Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations and to recognize, secure and report unsafe conditions immediately.
- Knowledge of safe working techniques and safety equipment and must be aware of the typical hazards of the workplace as well as the special hazards that may be encountered (biohazards, chemicals, asbestos / lead containing materials).
- Ability to understand and apply university and departmental policies and procedures.
Licenses / Certifications Required
Valid California Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.
Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $6,134 per month.
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
