SUMMARY

The Major Gifts Officer will be responsible for growing major gifts from individuals and family foundations.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE :

  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategies for the research, identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors, major donor prospects, and family foundations.
  • Collaborate with the CEO, Board, Philanthropy, and Volunteer teams on donor strategies, including cultivation and stewardship.
  • Help manage and expand the major donor base, including, but not limited to, assisting with writing associated donor communications and coordinating major donor recognition and benefits.
  • Maintain a portfolio of major donors.
  • Have at least 50 meaningful donor contacts a month to be reviewed at the weekly major gifts meeting
  • Conduct both internal and external presentations as needed.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report on progress toward meeting goals.
  • Create custom donor communications, develop proposals, and negotiate complex gifts while conveying knowledge and familiarity with the organization’s programs and services.
  • Assist with donor cultivation and stewardship events when needed, from conception stage to event follow-up strategies, and cooperate with other staff on details.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and lead donor tours of the facility.
  • Coordinate and participate in speaking engagements to donor groups.
  • Convey the organization’s mission to the community, donors, and volunteers while maintaining tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
  • Record contacts into database, and maintain accurate donor records and up-to-date major donor files.
  • Write copy for e-blasts, website, SCOOP, emails, and other communications as necessary.
  • Maintain a level of excellence with donor relations at all times.
  • Remain up to date on current major gift fundraising trends while embracing fundraising best practices.
  • Meet annual productivity and performance expectations.
  • Follow organization-wide branding efforts.
  • Attend and assist with organization events as needed.
  • Follow and adhere to the annual Philanthropy Plan.
  • Submit expenses for approval and collaborate with department staff to meet annual expense budgets.
  • Oversee and schedule volunteers as needed.
  • Subscribe and adhere to AFP’s Code of Ethical Principles and Standards, promote the Donor Bill of Rights, and maintain donor confidentiality at all times.
  • Uphold Pasadena Humane’s mission and Core Values, and contribute to building a culture of philanthropy.
  • Work as a team member with other departmental managers.
  • Perform and participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in donor relations in a nonprofit organization. Experience in animal welfare or animal shelter preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in communications or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in stewarding donors at all levels.
  • Extensive demonstrated success with securing major gifts from individuals,
  • corporations, and foundations.

  • Highly comfortable with public speaking, giving presentations, and face-to-face donor solicitation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in composing donor stewardship materials.
  • Active listening skills are a must.
  • Excellent computer skills, including competency with donor CRM databases, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Strong sense of professional judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Must interact positively with supervisor, management, coworkers, volunteers, and the public to promote a team effort and maintain a positive and professional approach.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • WORK SCHEDULE

    Must come to work regularly and on time. Must be available for early hours. Must be able to work early hours according to the needs of the department schedule, including weekends and holidays. Evening and weekend event participation is required.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Fast-paced environment. Employees are exposed to numerous animals (living and deceased), including those with uncertain dispositions. They are required to act in a safe and responsible manner.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and / or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 pounds. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
